Lubricating Your Chain?
The Key to Speed and Durability

You are halfway through your ride. Your legs feel strong, your cadence is steady, and you carve through corners like your tires are glued to the asphalt. Everything feels right until you hear it. A faint squeak, a grinding noise with every pedal stroke. The sound grows louder, resistance increases, and before you know it, every pedal stroke feels like you are pushing through mud. Your chain is drying out, and your performance is paying the price.

This is not just bad luck. A poorly maintained chain drains energy, wears down faster, and can completely throw off your ride. The good news is that this is entirely preventable. Smart chain maintenance means fewer headaches on the road, a more efficient bike, less wear on your drivetrain, and ultimately more speed.

When Should You Lubricate Your Chain?

You ride through the rain, dust kicks up, and your chain takes a beating from rough terrain. Even in dry conditions, dirt builds up and slowly strips away your lubricant. The result is always the same. A dry chain, increased friction, and a drivetrain that grinds itself down.

A well-lubricated chain is silent. If it starts squeaking or creaking, it is time to lubricate. If it makes a grinding noise, your first step should be a thorough cleaning before applying fresh lube. Staying ahead with preventive maintenance not only extends the lifespan of your components but also ensures you do not lose power due to unnecessary friction.

Not All Lubricants Are Created Equal

Your chain endures more force than you might think. Each link experiences up to 1000 newtons of pressure per 3mm pin. The sheer force of shifting, accelerating, and braking demands a lubricant that can handle extreme conditions.

Many traditional oils and sprays claim to boost performance but contain harmful substances like PTFE and silicones that are not just bad for the environment, but also for your drivetrain. PTFE, also known as Teflon®, breaks down into microplastics that find their way into the water, soil, and ultimately our food chain. It never disappears. Silicone-based lubricants offer poor adhesion, attracting dirt that accelerates wear instead of preventing it.

The solution is plant-based chain wax and chain oils that provide deep lubrication without the environmental footprint. Wax creates a protective barrier that repels dirt, while a high-quality oil penetrates deep into the links to maintain top performance in all conditions.

How to Lubricate Your Chain Like a Pro

Start with a clean chain. Apply a small drop of oil or wax to each link on the inside of the chain, between the rear derailleur and chainring. This is the area that experiences the most load during pedaling.

For added protection, apply a light coat to the outside of the chain between the chainring and cassette. Allow the lubricant to settle. For oil, 15 minutes is enough. For wax, letting it sit overnight ensures the best performance.

Always wipe off excess lubricant with a dry cloth. Too much lube attracts dirt, leading to more friction and faster wear. Reapply every few hundred kilometers, depending on your riding conditions.

Ride Without the Guilt

Most conventional lubricants use microplastics, harmful solvents, and heavy metals that not only pollute the environment but also contaminate groundwater. Airolube takes a different approach. Our lubricants are fully biodegradable, plant-based, and deliver top-tier performance without harming the planet. No unnecessary chemicals and no compromises.

Every great ride starts with a well-maintained bike. The better you care for your drivetrain, the better it will perform for you. A clean, properly lubricated chain means less resistance, reduced wear, and a smoother ride.

Whether you are chasing a podium, pushing through muddy trails, or grinding out long gravel miles, your chain determines how well you perform. Keep it in peak condition.
